Testimonial
‘I first visited Deepi and Rachel (DRT researchers) in July 2002
and I did lots of tests for them. After looking at my results, they felt
that I would benefit from blue tinted glasses. Since then my spelling
and writing has improved considerably. I am fourteen years old and I was
9 before we knew I was dyslexic. My school was not very supportive and
did not recognise my problems at all. In fact they just thought I was
slow and stupid! My mum arranged for me to see an educational psychologist
to assess me and they told me I was dyslexic. They found that I was above
average intelligence, but I was underachieving due to my dyslexia not
being recognised. Since then I have moved on to secondary school where
I still experience problems getting the school to recognise my difficulties.
However, things have improved a lot since I have been given the glasses
from the research centre.
I find the glasses really helpful because they stop the letters and numbers
I am reading from moving around. If I don’t wear them my eyes feel
as though they have to strain greatly to try and make the letters stay
still.
The glasses have made my life so much easier and schoolwork has become
more enjoyable. At first, I felt self-conscious when wearing the glasses
but when I realised how much they helped me, I soon overcame my fears
and my classmates quickly got used to me wearing them. I am now much more
confident about reading aloud in class because I can read quicker and
more fluently as my letters don’t move around so much. In addition
to this my handwriting and my spelling has improved too. In maths I used
to really struggle but now I’m actually enjoying it as I no longer
have to fight with my numbers moving about all over the page. In fact,
I’ve even been moved up a set, something I’ve wanted to do
for a long time.
Wearing the glasses in school has also meant that my teachers, particularly
those in the learning development department, have become more aware of
my difficulty. This has meant that I am now going to be allocated extra
time in my SATS and GCSEs and I am now being given much more support.
I would like to thank the staff at the DRT. I am very grateful to have
these glasses and I hope they help other children as well. I believe that
the glasses have helped me become much more successful in school.’
