Fundraising Dinner, Magdalen College On April 3rd 2009, there was another DRT fundraising dinner in the beautiful mediaeval Hall of Magdalen College, Oxford, OX1 4AU, hosted by Professor John Stein, chair of the Dyslexia Research Trust, his brother, celebrity chef, Rick Stein of TV 'Mediterranean Escapes' fame and Dr Sue Fowler, who has helped so many of you. We ate sumptuous food and superb wines donated by Reid wines in memory of the late Bill Baker, who was a great supporter of the DRT. We bid for fabulous prizes, including a dinner cooked in our own homes by Rick auctioned by Hugh Edmeades, Chairman of Christies. This was another night to
remember; everyone enjoyed themselves immensely and in so doing helped to keep our free clinics for research and treatment of dyslexic children at least for another year. John & Rick go to gaol for a day! They were helping to launch a controlled trial in Polmont prison near Edinburgh, funded by the Wellcome Trust , to see whether giving supplements of fish oils, minerals and vitamins could reduce young offenders’ violent and antisocial behaviour. This followed a smaller study funded by the charity, Natural Justice, which showed that such supplements reduced offending in prison by a third. Inhabitants of the Sherrington physiology building in Parks Rd. Oxford have got used every Thursday, to hordes of children visiting the Dyslexia Research Trust's free clinic for children with visual reading problems. The DRT raises its money in any way possible. DRT Chairman, Professor John Stein, shamelessly enlists the help of his celebrity brother, Rick Stein, and anybody else in the family who will help! George Roberts ran the Isle of Wight Marathon for the Dyslexia Research Trust last year. It is one of the toughest road events in the UK - a scenic course with a 1500 foot ascent! George is 62 years old (!) and he has been running for 17 years. He runs for Eynsham Running Club, and he covers many miles a week.He raised over £3000 for our worthy cause Professor Stein’s youngest daughter, Kate Stein, ran the London Marathon for the DRT this year. Kate worked with the DRT for a year in 2004 before going to medical school. She said 'working with dyslexic children at the DRT free clinic has moved me to help raise funds for its wonderful work ever since'. She ran the marathon in only 4 1/2 hours and she raised over £10,000 for the clinic. |
